Get Your Room Ready

Begin by laying down drop cloths and the area is prepared. Remove from the piece any metal hardware or knobs and store them secure and out of the way somewhere.

Sand and Bit Clean Up

Sand the piece’s surface. If the furniture is unfinished, minor sanding can be achieved. More comprehensive sanding would be required for parts that have been previously painted or treated with polyurethane. Any edges or corners that appear too rough may also be softened. When you have done sanding, to remove any dust and dirt, wipe the piece down with a rag or tack cloth.

The Piece Paint

If you want the piece to look like it was finished before, you’ll want to buy two shades of paint so that when the top player is distressed, the base colour shines through. You can use one colour of paint if you want wood peeking through. Paint the entire piece and, if appropriate, add a second coat. Enable the paint to fully dry. Apply Wax and Top Paint Layer (Optional)

Rub different parts of the painted piece with a candle, including the spots on the edges and corners, if you want a second colour to come through in the final product. The wax would not stick to the second coat of paint, making it easy to clean. Paint with the second colour throughout the entire item, including the waxed areas.
